Copyright Exceptions and Limitations

From OCWCWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The realm of copyright exceptions and limitations is vast and complex. Every legal jurisdiction has its own formulation of what behaviors are exempt from copyright restrictions, and we have only begun to explore the question of how open licensing affects those formulations. When we add in questions of cross-jurisdictional publication and downstream liability, we generate a staggering number of considerations. Yet the practical and philosophical issues reflected in these considerations are too serious to be avoided. This space is dedicated to collaborative efforts to improve our approach to these issues.

  • OCWC Global - Monterrey, Mexico - April 21-24
  • The International Legal Framework: Copyright Exceptions and Limitations for OER Discussion - University of Michigan - May 12
    • In May, many of the individuals involved in the Fair Use Working Group will travel to the University of Michigan to discuss current progress of the Fair Use in OER project. Piggybacking on this meeting, individuals involved in the Concept Map for the OCWC Project on Copyright Exceptions and Limitations will continue a discussion around the concept of the "Legal Barriers" that prevent people, internationally, from generating and publishing OER. Currently, this includes Lila Bailey of CC Learn, Garin Fons, Pieter Kleymeer and Joseph Hardin of Open.Michigan. If you are coming to U-M for the Fair Use Working Group meeting and are interested in staying an extra day to participate in this discussion, please let me, Garin Fons, know in order to make arrangements for extending your stay.
